Another dating / chat scam - USA/ Nigeria connection

Last week I got contacted via my profile on a dating web site. The person had a temporary profile only with no picture posted and sent me a one-liner including her yahoo address and she asked me to add her on the yahoo messenger.

I was bored so I fulfilled her request.

Her profile had said she was from Illinois, USA. I live in California. Once we chat on Y! messenger, she says she just left Madrid/ Spain and is in West Africa now.

Supposedly she works for a diamond company which is owned by her step dad. She lives with her daughter since her husband (or kids father, I do not recall) left her after the kid was born. Here are her photos - I am not quite sure that they are really HER photos:

She also tells me that she is on bad terms with her step dad since he asked her for sex. (If that's her real photos, I might ask her for sex also.)
During the chat she was kind of evasive, did not answer my questions but instead asked me questions herself. After about 30 minutes she said she'd have to leave West Africa soon and wants to come to the Bay Area (which is why she had written me) and whether she could stay at my place for a week or two until she had gotten herself a place.

She wanted to see photos of my house (I mailed her two).

During the following week we briefly chatted maybe 3 times. No deep conversation, this woman does not spell well, and obviously does half a dozen chats parallel.

I asked her to visit a web site that I host so that I could trap her IP number. It was

I used two different tools (web sites) to identify the location she was coming from. Most web sites reported this IP as in London, UK. One web site located it as CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI.

If you ever want to do this kind of check, grab the IP number from email headers and use a web site like on it. You need to make your email program or web client display all headers, to see the 'Originating IP'. Yahoo's email client offers this. I do not know about AOL or hotmail.

She claims to be on AOL (which I found strange, does AOL offer service in West Africa?)

Yesterday she started talking how her step-dad does not send the money he is supposed to send. A kind of allowance instead of a paycheck. Don't ask me for an explanation of this concept.

I did not like to hear her talk about bills that she cannot pay. I'm kind of allergic to this talk when I know a person from 60 minutes of chatting only :-)

Anyway, today she asked me directly to Western Union her the money, $750. As I am posting this, I am still chatting with her. A copy of today's chat is below.

Hiya, anybody know if this girl Sabrina has been seen before? (I tested a couple of her pics, and it showed one of them had been tested before) I will post that one next.

She contacted me about 2 days ago, and I have been talking to her, she is white according to the photo, but we talked for a moment on the phone and she sounded much like the Ugandans I work with here in Iraq. She claims she is a student working on becoming a medical doctor. (also claims to be a virgin and such, which was scarily enough, my first clue that something wasn't right) According to what she says, she is in Nigeria at the moment, finishing up her school, then she has to work there for a short time as a way to repay them for paying for her school.

After 1 day she was telling me how much she loves me and such, and then shortly after I said I care about her too, she started asking for money for some things. Started off asking for money for a laptop, since she is 'borrowing' her friend's and it might be taken back. Then when I balked, she asked for money for a web cam so we can see each other, I offered to buy it and send it, but she balked at that. Now she's asking for money for some books for school.

Any info would be appreciated, you can contact me at I am currently in Iraq with the U.S. Army. Apparently my internet is routed through Germany though since that is where it is saying I am from, LOL. Actually from Mississippi.

I was contacted by Kelvin Johnson also, but with a different picture and he said he was from Brooklyn, NY. He said he was a medical doctor but spoke of his fine education with a PH.D., Believe me, Jewish doctors let you know that they have MD's. Also mentioned half-Jewish, half-British, but that he was a good Christian who preached the Gospel. All his requests and replies have been aggrammatical, not a good sign for a highly educated native English speaker. I have been running the internet trfiecta lately--homeless guy, guy who doesn't look like picture and now, scammer guy,

Knuckleheads. When I first started checking out these sites,if you take a good look at the profiles, there are many obvious clues contained within these sites which instantly told me they weren't even American. I simply observed a couple for a few months to see what was going on,then I joined 1 of them for 1 month and was done. I had all the obvious BS I could tolerate.I have checked sites out for a few years now, just to look at all the fraud. Now that I have, there are very many more clues common to the fraud ones(which most seem to be).I'm not going to list them because of who may read. I do feel bad for whoever was scammed. The sites also appear to be in the US,but I highly doubt that the owners are even American.Bottom line:money only buys heartbreak and/or embarrassment. Never send money to someone you don't know, especially out of the country for __________(whatever reason).

Listen up guys... this is an interesting read outlines Nigeria's hotbed activity and a typical scammer interview. Take heed !

Online scams create 'Yahoo! millionaires'

In Lagos, where scamming is an art, the quickest path to wealth for the cyber-generation runs through a computer screen.

(FORTUNE Magazine) - Akin is, like many things in cyberspace, an alias. In real life he's 18. He wears Adidas sneakers, a Rolex Submariner watch, and a kilo of gold around his neck. Akin, who lives in Lagos, is one of a new generation of entrepreneurs that has emerged in this city of 15 million, Nigeria's largest. His mother makes $30 a month as a cleaner, his father about the same hustling at bus stations. But Akin has made it big working long days at Internet cafes and is now the main provider for his family and legions of relatives.

Call him a 'Yahoo! millionaire.'

Akin buys things online - laptops, BlackBerries, cameras, flat-screen TVs - using stolen credit cards and aliases. He has the loot shipped via FedEx or DHL to safe houses in Europe, where it is received by friends, then shipped on to Lagos to be sold on the black market. (He figures Americans are too smart to sell a camera on eBay to a buyer with an address in Nigeria.)

Akin's main office is an Internet cafe in the Ikeja section of Lagos. He spends up to ten hours a day there, seven days a week, huddled over one of 50 computers, working his scams.

And he's not alone: The cafe is crowded most of the time with other teenagers, like Akin, working for a 'chairman' who buys the computer time and hires them to extract e-mail addresses and credit card information from the thin air of cyberspace. Akin's chairman, who is computer illiterate, gets a 60 percent cut and reserves another 20 percent to pay off law enforcement officials who come around or teachers who complain when the boys cut school. That still puts plenty of cash in Akin's pocket.

A sign at the door of the cafe reads, WE DO NOT TOLERATE SCAMS IN THIS PLACE. DO NOT USE E-MAIL EXTRACTORS OR SEND MULTIPLE MAILS OR HACK CREDIT CARDS. YOU WILL BE HANDED OVER TO THE POLICE. NO 419 ACTIVITY IN THIS CAFE. The sign is a joke; 419 activity, which refers to the section of the Nigerian law dealing with obtaining things by trickery, is a national pastime. There are no coherent laws relating to internet scams, the police are mostly computer illiterate, and penalties for financial crimes are rarely enforced

'What do you want me to do?' Akin asks in pidgin English, explaining why he turned to a life of Internet crime. 'It is my God-given talent. Our politicians, they do their own; me, I'm doing my own. I feed my family - my sister, my mother, my popsie. Man must survive.'

The scams perpetrated by Akin and his comrades are many and varied: Moneygram interceptions, Western Union hijackings, check laundering, identity theft, and outright begging, with tall tales of dying relatives and large sums of money in search of safe haven. One popular online fraud often practiced by women (or boys pretending to be women) involves separating lonely men from their money.

Attempts to speak to government officials about Internet crime were futile. They all claimed ignorance of such scams; some laughed it off as Western propaganda.
Some officials, who asked not be identified, said young people are drawn to Internet crime as a way of getting back at a society that has no plans for them. Others see it as a form of reparation for the sins of the West.

Or as Akin puts it, 'White people are too gullible. They are rich, and whatever I gyp them out of is small change to them.'
